- Bring all ultrasound scans with you to the hospital.
- Do not eat or drink 6 hours prior to your surgery.
If you are taking Warfarin:
- For atrial fibrillation (AF), Warfarin should be stopped 5 days prior to procedure.
- If on warfarin for a Mechanical Heart Valves or post blood clots in legs or lungs. The Warfarin needs to be weaned off under cover of short acting blood thinner called Clexane.
Diabetic Patients prior to Carotid Artery Stenting:
If you are taking the tablet, Metformin, you need to stop taking these 24 hours prior to your procedure.
Patients with kidney failure or abnormal kidney function undergoing carotid stenting:
Mr. Holdaway needs to be aware of this prior to your procedure. You will need to be prescribed a medication to reduce the chance of dye induced kidney problems. Bring ultrasound scans.
Patients on dialysis having surgery or stenting:
You should arrange dialysis 1 day prior to the procedure.
If any of the following occurs post procedure please contact Mr. Holdaway:
- Severe headache.
- Swelling or progressive pain in the neck.
- Weakness or numbness on the opposite side of the body to the carotid procedure.
- Sudden loss of vision or speech disturbance.
